- Air fryers are just small capacity convection ovens that will not toast and are difficult to clean.
- Put simply, they’re a bad reinvention of the toaster and another unnecessary kitchen appliance.
- Here’s why a traditional convection toaster oven will serve you better.
Air “fries” are a scam. They are in name a deep fryer, but in function, nothing like it. In truth, these are just rudimentary convection ovens made with cheap plastic. They offer less cooking surface and fewer functions for a similar footprint on your countertop and end up being just one more bulky appliance that you or your kitchen never needed.
Here’s why you should avoid air fryers and buy a toaster oven instead:
Even our journalists who test air fryers don’t really like them
Our job is to tell you what to buy, and in some cases we’re tasked with reviewing products that we would never buy on our own. We always view, test and review these products with all due respect to all products and services. In the end, you are going to buy what you are going to buy and that is it. We respect your choice.
But the nicest thing our reporters Jen Gushue and James Brains, who have tested dozens of things, have to say about air fryers is this: You won’t fool anyone into thinking you just came out. those chicken wings from a deep fryer. “
Essentially, an air fryer is a convection toaster that doesn’t toast, which is nonsense in my book.
The term “air fryer” is just a marketing ploy for a technology that has been around for decades
This is a plea, not out of condescension, not out of derision or contempt, but for the good of all that is honest and decent in the global consumer web. Don’t fall for the marketing ploys that clutter your kitchen.
Convection cooking (the technology behind air fryers) has been around since the early 1900s and in home kitchens since at least 1945 in the form of your trusty toaster oven.
With the addition of a wire pan and a tin pan, any decent convection toaster oven will get what an air “fryer” can and more. It can bake, roast and grill, and it can even toast! Ah the novelty! Plus, thanks to the internal fan that prevents hot and cold spots, a convection toaster oven arguably performs better than a regular oven.
Most air fryers are awkward in shape and size
Consider how many batches it would take to cook even for just two, let alone four, in an air fryer. And while the footprint is a bit smaller, it won’t fit in a corner or under a cabinet as easily as a squarer, prettier, and usually stainless steel convection toaster would.
The bottom line: Avoid the air fryer, buy the toaster oven
But for goodness sake, I once again implore you to save your wallet, your precious counter space – and its aesthetics – and stay away from hard-to-clean, plastic pod fryers. cleanse and single dose that everyone seems to be using. buy and peddle. Do yourself better and stick with the classic toaster oven you probably already have, and if you want to use it for air frying, a roasting pan and grill are all you need.
Below are some convection toasters recommended by our expert home appliance tester and reviewer James Brains who totally agrees that they will serve you much, much better.
