Pandemic-era face masks and social distancing mandates may be coming to an end across the country, but many Americans may not yet be ready to get closer and closer to strangers while on vacation.
If that sounds like you, you might consider vacationing in the Rockies or the Blue Ridge Mountains, two of the world’s top 10 ranges for mountain vacations. recently rated by British outdoor clothing and equipment supplier Blacks. Visits to outdoor outdoor destinations like national and state parks have skyrocketed amid Covid and those still looking for safe outdoor getaways can head to the literal hills.
The Rocky Mountains, which stretch from the far northwest of Canada to southern New Mexico, ranked 6th in the world, scoring 7.2 out of a possible 10. The Blue Ridge Mountains, meanwhile, which stretch from southern Pennsylvania to northern Georgia, came in at No. 8 in the world with a score of 6.6, tied with the Caucasus Mountains bordering Europe. -Asia.
Blacks ranked each mountain range based on factors including number of peaks, average temperatures and rainfall, annual search volume and Instagram posts, and average hotel rates per night. The two North American ranges were the most expensive in the rankings, with a hotel night in the Rockies costing an average of $143.60 and one in the Blue Ridges at around $132.76.
The average fare in the Pyrenees, France and Spain, by comparison, is around $67.75.

Fancy something more exotic or distant than the Rockies? The Pyrenees, in fact, top the list, with the Atlas Mountains in North Africa and the Andes in South America completing the first three ranges. The latter, in fact, is the cheapest range to visit, with an average hotel cost of just under $49 a night in the Andean metropolis of Bogota, Colombia, according to Blacks.
Competitor No. 1, the Pyrenees is full of ski resorts, national parks and hiking trails, and has scored high in terms of popularity on the web, with more than 1.5 million Google searches per year and 2 million Instagram posts. The Atlas Mountains, on the other hand, are the hottest and least humid.
Whichever range you’re headed for, preparation is key, according to a statement from Kiera Baxter, Marketing Manager at Blacks.
“A great mountain vacation is all in the planning,” she said. “It’s essential to take your time to plan everything from your itineraries to your accommodation, to make sure you’ve considered all eventualities and don’t get caught.
“Back up your routes with safer alternatives and have a plan in mind for the unexpected,” Baxter added.
