The In Memoriam section of the 2022 Grammy Awards does not honor Lata Mangeshkar at the ceremony, is mentioned on the website


After the Oscars, the Grammy Awards also omitted legendary Indian playback singer Lata Mangechkar in the In Memoriam section during the ceremony. The In Memoriam section of the Oscars was also missing the name Nightingale of India which upset his fans. The In Memoriam section of the 2022 Grammys paid tribute to songs by the late Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, performed by Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler. Taylor Hawkins and Tom Parker are also remembered.

Lata, along with the late singer-songwriter Bappi Lahiri, were mentioned on the Grammys website, even though they were absent at the ceremony itself.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes and distributes the Oscars, also forgot to mention the late comedian Dilip Kumar in the In Memoriam section. Both Lata and Dilip had contributed significantly to Indian cinema by giving us timeless cinematic and musical works, which fans said the organization was unaware of.

This was particularly notable because earlier the Academy featured Irrfan Khan, Bhanu Athaiya, Sushant Singh Rajput, and Rishi Kapoor in its In Memoriam section.

Lata’s career, who died on February 6, 2022, began as a playback singer and spanned more than 70 years, and straddled almost the entire history of independent India. She left behind a treasure trove of vocalized songs in her melodious voice.

Her fans are furious on social media sites. One wrote on Twitter: “Lata mangeshkar wasn’t in the tribute? disappointed but not surprised. #GRAMMYs.

Another wrote: “What a shame @RecordingAcad didn’t acknowledge legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar who passed away last year. #GRAMMYs.

One tweeted: “So the Oscars and Grammys didn’t honor the late great Lata Mangeshkar in their respective memoriam segments? It’s a shame. #GrammyAwards #Oscars.

Lata has received the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke awards. His immortal solos and duets with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh, along with a legion of other leading Indian singers, are among the most memorable songs in Hindi cinema.

Lata Mangeshkar recorded her latest song “Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki” composed by Mayuresh Pai as a tribute to Indian army and nation. It was released on March 30, 2019.
