How did the first three weeks of the course go? We know it’s a busy time of year and even more so this year as we all adjust to learning and working in person. do not forget to to reach if you are having difficulty, there are many services here to help you, and some are open late Tuesdays and Wednesdays on the Nanaimo campus. There are also many events listed below that will help you connect and have fun on campus.

On the occasion of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

VIU will be closed on Thursday September 30 to mark the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day “honors lost children and residential school survivors, their families and communities.” We encourage you to wear an orange shirt and participate in some of the activities organized on campus:

Cheer on the Mariners soccer teams! ⚽️

Watch the Mariners’ men’s and women’s soccer games this Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26 at Merle Logan Field at the Beban Recreation Complex. The women play at 11:45 a.m. and the men play at 2:15 p.m. on both days. The two teams won their matches last week and hope to continue this streak throughout the weekend.

Tips for off-campus housing ??

Do you have questions about off-campus housing? The Off-Campus Housing Coordinator will be available for walk-in visits for the foreseeable future on the following days:

  • Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the International Building (255);
  • Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the upper cafeteria.


Back-to-school photo contest ??

Have you already taken part in the back-to-school photo contest? Take a photo of your favorite study spaces (on or off campus) and post it on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag # VIUBack2School. All entries must be posted no later than October 1, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. to enter for a chance to win a VIU hoodie.

Open Mic Night at the pub ??

The VIUSU pub (@viusupub) The Open Mic night is back, 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. every Thursday evening, 19+ entry and two pieces of ID required. Entrance is currently reduced in seating capacity due to restrictions. Proof of vaccination is required for in-person meals.

VIU games ??

The VIU Games are an annual event where teams of 8-10 members are formed from VIU clubs, faculties and communities in an integrated competition of spirit, faculty pride and sportsmanship. Members of each team will take part in multiple events throughout the VIU Games day-long competitions in sport, teamwork and mystery. The winning team will have its name engraved on the Chassels Cup! Registration is now open.

Student well-being peers

Looking to get in touch with a peer wellness student? A new initiative from VIU Thrive, VIU Peer Wellness Program will now begin in early October, a date correction from last week, in Room 330 of the Nanaimo Campus Library. A reminder to get your VIU identity card for 24/7 access to the library as well as other benefits like printing and photocopying! Get in touch with all questions.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction

Have you ever wondered what mindfulness means and how it might benefit you as a student? Join VIU counselors for 8 weeks of mindfulness practice to help reduce stress and improve functioning. This group is free for all students. Learn more and register.

Early warning system

Are you concerned about the personal well-being of a peer? VIU’s Early Warning System responds to students in need with a variety of services, including counseling, counseling, accessibility services, financial aid and more. Fill in this form if you think a friend needs extra support.

GoByBike Weeks ??

COVID Updates

British Columbia vaccination card reminder ??

As of September 13, the BC vaccination card program has been underway. Proof of vaccination is required to participate in certain discretionary activities or enter certain discretionary areas on UIV campuses. Familiarize yourself with the locations where proof of British Columbia vaccination applies on our campuses and facilities.

Vaccination clinics on campus

There is still time to get your COVID-19 vaccine on campus! A clinic is located on the first floor of building 255 in the multipurpose room (170), until September 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be two walk-in clinics at the Powell River campus on Tuesday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Monday, October 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also enter any vaccination clinic in your community.
